Back in Balance Minerals® Rates of Feed
Each formula lists a rate of feed on the label that will provide proper nutrition for the species in question. If you have questions or concerns about how much to feed, please contact Alethea. All formulas can be fed free choice.
Expiration and Oxidation
Since Back in Balance Minerals® formulas use only chelated and bioavailable minerals, the minerals do have an expiration and are subject to degradation by heat, sun or moisture. Any unused mineral should be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from sunlight and the bag or container closed. This helps prevent oxidation of the minerals and herbs in the product.
North Central Feed Products, LLC mixes up mineral by the 1/4 ton as needed. They do not mix up large batches and store them. This means your mineral is as fresh as possible when you receive it. Purchasing smaller quantities at a time means you will get the freshest product possible.
Back in Balance Minerals®- Ways to Introduce the New Mineral
Animals are creatures of habit and many of them will hesitate to try a new food or mineral. "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink" can be very frustrating to horse owners! The reality is you can often entice animals to try new things if you are patient and have a few tricks up your sleeve.
Back in Balance Minerals® formulas do not contain molasses. Molasses can be an occasionally useful food for improving flavor of treatments or providing a source of energy to ailing animals. Molasses does contain some beneficial minerals but as a continuous feed, molasses can upset digestive balance, increasing susceptibility to insects and parasites and increasing blood sugar (especially deleterious in horses bordering on insulin resistance).
Because Back in Balance Minerals® formulas do not contain molasses or extra salt, animals used to minerals with molasses and salt may initially show less interest in the new mineral. This is a normal reaction! Similar to children offered the choice between a healthy meal or dessert and snacks, the animals may choose the less nutritious but molasses-laden products.
If your animals are reluctant to try much of the new mineral, there are a few things you can do to introduce the different taste to them.
1. As the animals are started on Back in Balance Minerals®, remove any other salt sources until they are eating the mineral well. Salt should be offered free choice after the animals readily take the new mineral.
2. Try mixing a small amount of the new mineral in your old mineral formula. As the animals take the mixture, slowly increase the amount of the Back in Balance minerals until they are eating the new formula well. Remove the old formula for best results.
3. Try mixing in a favorite treat or supplement (grain, alfalfa, horse treats, herbs, fruit, etc), again increasing amounts of mineral while decreasing amounts of treat over time.
With a little time and patience, even the most reluctant animals will begin to eat their minerals and you can relax, knowing your animals are getting fresh, balanced minerals in forms most available for digestion and nutrition.
